I. Course Title: Public Health Biostatistics

II. Course Number: PBHL 400

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: STAT 200 and PBHL 370.

V. Course Description: 

Students explore public health biostatistical concepts and reasoning.  The course includes an examination and interpretation of public health data and evaluating the results of biostatistical analyses.

Note(s): Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning designated course.

  • Probability & Confidence Intervals
  • Hypothesis Testing Procedures
  • Descriptive & Inferential Statistical Methods
  • Multivariable Methods
  • Nonparametric Tests
  • Survival Analysis

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Method of Instruction: Lectures (Online), Required Readings/Textbook, Recommended/Supplemental Readings, Class and Small Group Discussions

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Evaluate some of the different types of public health data.
  2. Examine the differences in public health data distributions.
  3. Perform descriptive and inferential statistical analyses using public health data.
  4. Analyze and interpret the results of statistical tests.

Program Outcomes:

1. Impart students with a foundation in public health principles, practices, and processes.

2. Prepare students to enter the public health workforce and/or graduate programs in public health, health education, health promotion, or other health-related fields.

3. Provide students with the required coursework and knowledge in the eight Areas of Responsibility of Health Education Specialists to be eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination:

  • Exams - 40%

  • Assignments, Quizzes, Projects and/or Other Coursework - 40%
