Education

Our Master of Science in Education degree is ideal if you are a practicing or prospective teacher. Working closely with an advisor, students develop a personalized program of study that incorporates several professional development elements. We offer various concentrations to ensure you receive the degree that matches your personal and professional goals.

Concentration Options

You get to design a personalized path that helps you make the most of your education to achieve your future professional goals. The Education M.S. concentrations include:

Curriculum and Instruction (without licensure)

This 100% online option provides participants with knowledge, skills, and dispositions in the areas of high-impact teaching strategies, cultural responsiveness, instructional technology, and globalization of the curriculum and interdisciplinary teaching. Non-licensure coursework can be completed fully online in one year.

Curriculum and Instruction (with licensure)

This program is geared toward college graduates with bachelor鈥檚 degrees who wish to become teachers. Licensure coursework can be finished in as little as 18 months.

Mathematics Education concentration

Our 100% online concentration prepares you to teach dual-enrollment math courses, teach math at the college level, or earn a promotion as a math or STEM leader in your school district. We've designed this program with practicing teachers in mind.

Careers and Internships

Curriculum and Instruction (with or without licensure) Concentration:

Our graduates have used this degree to launch their teaching careers and become school instructional coaches and content area leaders in their school divisions. Full-time students may be eligible to work as a paid graduate assistant.

Mathematics Education Concentration:

Earning this degree can help with your career advancement by helping you earn positions such as: math department chair, math coach, or district math/STEM supervisor. You can also supplement your income by teaching online math courses part-time. You will be qualified to teach dual-enrollment math courses or college level math courses, full-time or part-time.

Opportunities for Education students at Radford

Curriculum and Instruction (with or without licensure) Concentration:

While earning your Education M.S., we offer you the opportunity to take courses towards earning additional endorsements such as a gifted endorsement, autism studies certificate, or special education endorsement.

Mathematics Education Concentration:

You will have the opportunity to present at conferences and/or publish research in collaboration with your professors. You can also participate in our collaborative NASA Teacher Ambassadors virtual program.

Admissions Requirements

Curriculum and Instruction (with or without licensure) Concentration:

  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 grading scale
  • An official transcript from each college or university where you earned a degree or post-baccalaureate credit (Note: An unofficial transcript is sufficient from all institutions where transfer credit was earned and may be uploaded directly to the application.)
  • An essay that explains why you seek to enroll in this program (e.g. short and long-term goals, past experiences have led you to this decision, etc.).
  • A personal resume
  • Two (2) separate letters of reference that address one of the following areas:
    1. Your history of successful teaching experiences with students
    2. Your potential to successfully teach
    3. Your potential for academic and professional success in the field of education

Mathematics Education Concentration:

  • We would like to see at least a 3.0 GPA, but will look at other materials if you fall below
  • Undergraduate coursework in mathematics beyond calculus
  • Two letters of professional recommendation
  • A current resume
  • A written statement of application

We offer highly interactive synchronous, asynchronous, and hybrid courses where you will gain new content knowledge from the professors as well as learn from the practices and experiences of other math teachers who teach in different parts of the state and country.
