Clinical Medicine II is the second in a series of courses designed to acquaint students with medical aspects of and pathology of diseases and disabilities.


Detailed Description of Course

Content: Clinical Medicine II is the second in a series of courses designed to acquaint students with medical aspects of and pathology of diseases and disabilities. This unit is orthopedically-oriented and follows Patient Management I and Theory and Practice I to reinforce concepts and skills developed in the identified courses. Included are special units on management of hand pathology, maternal adaptation to pregnancy, and abuse/neglect/ and domestic violence across the lifespan.  This course prepares students to participate in AHPT 830 Clinical Experience I.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Will include but not be limited to: Instructional methods and learning experiences may include lecture format, small group/class discussions, selected readings, analysis of patient case studies, and written assignments.  Students will also have expert clinicians speak to them on managing hand problems, burn management, maternal adaptations to pregnancy, fetal well-being, pre/ post partum exercises, child and elder abuse, and domestic violence.


Goals and Objectives of this Course

Student will be able to: 

1) Be able to discuss terminology; pathology, etiology, and clinical profiles of the following orthopedic conditions: fractures, degenerative joint disease/ inflammatory reactions, congenital disorders, bone tumors/ infections, scoliosis/kyphosis, cervical/thoracic/lumbar spinal lesions, and soft tissue injuries to ligaments, tendons and muscles;

2) Identify common orthopedic complications with aging (osteoporosis, DJD);

3) Desribe the medical and surgical aspects of joint replacement or repair and integrate rehabilitation procedures indicated after surgeries;

4) Understand the orthopedic aspects and treatment of selected congenital disorders and indications for physical therapy support services;

5) Describe internal and external soft tissue problems of the foot (calluses, corns, fasciitis, and neuromas) and propose how these effect functional mobility;

6) Describe the credentials of the physical therapist who specializes in care of the hand;

7) Locate and describe the important structures of the hand, muscles, ligaments, peripheral nerves, vascular supply, and skeleton;

8) Perform a complete hand evaluation (sensation, muscle function, and overall functional capacity);

9) Assess major problems and potential complications in overall burn management;

10) Discuss the roles of members of the ideal team for care of severe burns and integration of care through effective and timely communications with other team members and family;

11) Design a plan of care for the burn patient from the time of intial referral to discharge;

12) Evaluate the psychological aspects of care of the severely burned patient and discuss how this aspect of care is managed by defining the roles of the physical therapist and others within the healthcare team;

13) Describe normal pregnancy states, maternal adaptations to pregnancy, management of labor/delivery, fetal well-being and the role the physical therapist plays in intrapartum and postpartum care;

14) Understand issues of incontinence that sometimes occurs after pregnancy and benefits of general pre/ post partum conditioning exercises;

15) Evaluate the medical and psychological profiles of child abuse, elder abuse and domestic violence;

16) Recognize the patterns of physical, emotional, substance and sexual abuse and provide resources for client referral;

17) Evaluate the medical and psychological profiles of child abuse, elder abuse and domestic violence along with their significance in healthcare planning, and the physical therapists’ legal responsibility as mandatory reporters.
