Demonstration, exercises, studio projects and critiques regarding two dimensional principles and elements of design including color theory.

Note(s): General Education and Humanistic or Artistic Expression designated course.  Recommended to be taken before any other studio art course. Students cannot receive credit for both ARTS 101 and ART 101.

2. Detailed Description of Course

The purpose of this course is to develop the student鈥檚 awareness of the underlying abstraction that is inherent in all forms of visual art.  Through the use of various artistic materials, visual problems, and historical references, the student will become familiar with the basic problems of design which the designer/artist attempts to solve.

    1) Basic Rendering
    2) Spatial Constructions
    3) Line Problems
    4) Value Range
    5) Linear Perspective
    6) Motion Studies
    7) Texture Comparisons
    8) Color Studies

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will learn visual relationships through visual exercises and class critiques.  Individual attention is given to each student in the lab section of the course.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of the course requirements, the student will implement the following basic design principles in their art work:

    1) Visually effective combinations of the formal elements of art and design, i.e., space, line,
        value, etc.
    2) Individual expression

5. Assessment Measures

Graded assignments may include weekly visual exercises, mid-term and final on art concepts and critical analysis assessment.

6. Other Course Information

Students may be assigned library research and gallery visits.
