ATTR 205: Introduction to Athletic Training Skills
Prerequisites: Cumulative GPA of 2.75
Corequisites: ESHE 201 and ATTR 225
Credit Hours: (2)
Didactic and psychomotor skill instruction with practical examinations covering taking and recording of vital signs, emergency care procedures, taping, wrapping, splinting, and basic modality theory and application.
Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both ESHE 205 and ATTR 205.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course is designed to be taken in conjunction with ESHE 201. Students in this course will develop skills in taping of an arch, ankle, great toe, shin, wrist, hand, finger, and elbow. In addition, students will learn how to construct and apply a splint, how to care for open wounds, basic assessment skills, and first aid and emergency care for an injured athlete.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Instructional methods in this course will be brief lecture, followed by demonstration
and then student hands-on learning. Students will work in groups to develop psychomotor
skills associated with the care of injured athletes. Skills will be assessed by the
students prior to being assessed by the instructor.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. Appropriately apply tape to support or protect the following, arch, ankle, shin,
patellar tendon, finger, thumb, wrist, hand, elbow.
2. °ÄÃÅÀÏÆæÈËÂÛ̳ an ace bandage to the quadriceps, groin, shoulder, elbow, calf.
3. Fit a pair of crutches and instruct an athlete on the correct way to use them.
4. Identify the indications, contraindications, basic therapeutic effects and application
methods for ice, superficial heat, ultrasound and electrical stimulation.
5. Demonstrate the proper technique for cleaning and covering an open would.
6. Construct or apply a splint for a finger, wrist, ankle and knee.
7. Measure the following vital signs: pulse, blood pressure, consciousness and breathing.
