FINAL HONORS PROJECT

Biology 488H: Final Honors Project (3)

Prerequisites: Enrollment in Honors Program; completion of all other Honors Program requirements; minimum 3.5 GPA in all courses and in Biology.

Students will conduct library, field, or laboratory research and write a thesis on that research.  In order to receive credit, a student must earn a grade of 鈥淎 or B.鈥  Course may not be repeated.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The content of the course will vary with each student.  The student may conduct a literature search and prepare a manuscript.  The student might choose to conduct an original field or laboratory research project and prepare a thesis describing the project.  All final projects must be approved by the department and the Honors Council.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The student will select a project supervisor.  The project will be planned and conducted by the student with the supervisor鈥檚 guidance.  The supervisor will ask two other faculty members, at least one of whom will be from the Biology department, to serve with him or her as an advisory committee and to serve as readers.  The student鈥檚 work will be evaluated by this committee.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will gain experience in approaching scientific problems in analytical thinking, and in communicating scientific knowledge.  Students will demonstrate effective use of the scientific method and will be able to clearly describe scientific knowledge obtained using the scientific method.

 

Assessment Measures

The supervisor of the final project and the final project committee will evaluate the success of the project.
