Inorganic Chemistry

Prerequisites: C- or better in CHEM 112

This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of Inorganic Chemistry.

Note(s): Scientific and Quantitative Reasoning designated course.

 
2. Detailed Description of Course

The following topics will be covered:
    1) Atomic Structure, atomic spectra, molecular orbital theory
    2) Group Theory
    3) The Chemistry of Main Group elements
    4) The Coordination Chemistry of the Transition metals
    5) Thermodynamic aspects of Inorganic reactions
    6) The Coordination Chemistry of the Lanthanide and Actinide Elements
    7) Organometallic Chemistry of Main Group and Transition metal elements
    8) Solid state properties of materials: metals, crystal structures, semiconductor
    9) Catalysis: heterogeneous and homogeneous

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture periods will be used to introduce students to the theory and principles of inorganic chemistry.  The content described above will be introduced and reinforced through practice problems and graded homework assignments.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

After successful completion of Inorganic Chemistry, the student will be able to:
    1) Demonstrate proficiency in the topics listed above.
    2) Communicate chemical concepts effectively.

5. Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student鈥檚 success in the course is based on tests and other materials which may include quizzes, homework exercises, and papers.
