COMS 346: Media Production 3A: Cinematography
Prerequisites: COMS 130, COMS 146 (C- or better), COMS 246, COMS 247; or permission of the instructor.
Co-requisite: COMS 347 or permission of instructor.

Instructional Method : Two hours lecture and two hours laboratory.
Note(s) : Humanistic or Artistic Expression designated course. Students must enroll in COMS
346 and COMS 347 concurrently.
Fundamental course in which students further their knowledge of the basic tools, practices,
and processes of media production. Projects require students to engage in the creative
and technical aspects of developing story ideas, scriptwriting, pre-production, camera
operation, lighting, directing and audio recording in multiple environments. Students
must enroll in COMS 346 and COMS 347, concurrently.
Detailed Description of Course
Media Production 3A: Cinematography is designed to familiarize students with various
production practices covering a wide range of media formats. Though the course focuses
on how to properly and effectively use the camera and lighting techniques to relay
information to audiences, concepts such as story development, scriptwriting, pre-production,
audio recording, and directing are also addressed. Assignments are designed to give
students practical experience in the foundations of preparing for and recording of
different types of media both in the field and in a controlled studio environment.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will consist of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and critiques.
Students may be asked to read material from a required textbook, watch videos, and/or
read articles or selections from books. Students will also work on various production-related
assignments in and out of class. Students will be asked to critique the work of others
and apply feedback from classmates and instructors to their projects.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Students will be able to:
1)Identify and describe key terms and practices related to various forms of production.
2)Demonstrate skills necessary to effectively communicate and collaborate on media productions.
3)Demonstrate skills required to create quality media productions including story development, pre-production, cinematography, audio recording, and directing.
4)Select appropriate shots and lighting for a variety of situations and effectively execute selected shots.
5)Understand and execute the roles of producer, director, and cinematographer in various production situations.
Assessment Measures
1) Tests/quizzes covering course content.
2) Production exercises in which students demonstrate a working knowledge of concepts
and processes.
