COMS 461: Orientation to Study Abroad

Prerequisites: Enrollment in a School of Communication study abroad program

Credit hours (1-3)


This course is designed as a preparation for school of communication study abroad trips. Topics covered will include: academic preparation and behavioral expectations as well as culture, safety, health, packing, and finances.


Detailed Description of Course


The content of the course can vary, but will generally cover study abroad topics including: culture, safety, health, communication, packing, travel regulations, etc. The goal would be to prepare students for the country or countries which they would be traveling to.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course


The course will be taught by the instructor(s) leading the study abroad trip. Course conduct will vary depending on the need and the destination but can include more trad itional lecture, interactive activities, tutorials, group work, etc. Other instructional strategies may include, but are not limited to, student presentations, case studies, analytical papers, and guest speakers.


Goals and Objectives of the Course


Students completing this course will be able to:
    1) Successfully adjust to the academic, physical, and emotional requirements of studying abroad.
    2) Discuss the goals and context of their study abroad experience.
    3) Discriminate between the different printed and online information about the destination country.
    4) Explain safety plans and procedures.
    5) Describe the academic similarities and differences between an on-campus course and a study abroad experience.


Assessment Measures

These will also depend on the individual course, but would likely include some of the following: examinations, quizzes, reflection papers, journals, research papers, reviews, oral presentations, informal writing, portfolios, class discussion, experiential learning, and attendance.
