This course will serve as an intermediate study of human language processing and performance, the rules governing language in various modalities, and the use and variations of language in society.

2. Detailed Description of Course

The course is designed to provide students with a foundation in language form, content, and use, as well as a theoretical framework of linguistic knowledge and competence.

The following topics will be covered in this course:
    1) Linguistic competence and performance.
    2) Language form and content, to include morphology, syntax, and semantics within the
        framework of communicative development.
    3) Language form, content, and use communicative modalities, focusing on variations in rules
        governing spoken and written language.
    4) Variations in writing styles with an introduction to APA format.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Instructional activities may include in-class lectures, demonstrations, and in-class exercises.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon completion of this course, students will be able:

    1) To define the relationship between language and thought.
    2) To describe linguistic universals.
    3) To identify phrase structure rules and transformation rules.
    4) To describe development of syntactic structures.
    5) To perform syntactical analyses on expressive language samples.

5. Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include written homework assignments, in-class quizzes and exams, and a comprehensive final exam.
