COSD 614: Childhood Apraxia of Speech

Prerequisite: Graduate standing or permission

An in-depth study of assessment and management principles concerning Childhood Apraxia of Speech, a childhood motor speech disorder.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

A study of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), a childhood motor speech disorder. Course topics include

  • Features and characteristics of CAS
  • Controversies regarding CAS
  • Differential Diagnosis
  • Assessment procedures
  • Planning appropriate and functional outcomes for children with CAS
  • Effective treatment strategies for preschool children with CAS.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course will be conducted in a seminar format, requiring students 1) to read, critically evaluate and summarize current research literature from periodicals, books, and other media in class; 2) present a combination of oral and written case studies in class and to the instructor; and 3) create and share specially designed treatment materials.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to

  • Describe features and characteristics of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS)
  • Identify assessment procedures for CAS
  • Plan appropriate and functional treatment outcomes that are congruent with social and academic needs of children with CAS
  • Identify effective treatment strategies for children with CAS
  • Create effective treatment materials for children with CAS
  • Describe how to include families and other team members in assessment and treatment

 

Assessment Measures

Students may be assessed using traditional objective and essay tests. Student performance on applied topics may be assessed during presentations in the last two weeks of class.

Both Web based resources and traditional print based media resources will be used in this course.
