DSN 340

DSN 340: Pre-Internship Seminar

Prerequisites: Passing of Second Year Portfolio Review and a minimum of a 2.5 GPA in major.

Credit Hours: (1)

A self-directed study to prepare the student for a summer internship experience in fashion design, interior design or fashion/interior merchandising.

Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both DSN 340 and DSN 390.


Detailed Description of Course
This course prepares students to locate, obtain, and prepare for a summer internship opportunity. Topics include: internship objectives, professional resume and cover letter writing, interviewing techniques and professional attire, internship expectations, and contacts for possible internship opportunities.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course is a self-directed exploration of potential internship opportunities, guided by design instructors and career specialists. Class sessions will emphasize interactive participation, and research. The student will complete individualized research specific to his/her stated objectives for the internship experience. Timely processing of all internship documents, including the official contract with an internship site, is required.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will demonstrate:
1. The ability to identify career opportunities within the design fashion/interiors profession.
2. Understanding of requirements for summer internship (time management and organization skills, contracts, hours required at internship site, and, expectations).
3. Knowledge of opportunities for experiential learning within specific cities (US or international).
4. Competency in producing clear objectives and goals for the summer internship experience.
5. Competency in producing a professional resume.
6. Competency in applying active listening skills and interviewing techniques (attire, questions and answers, phone interview protocol).
7. The ability to participate in a community service project.


Assessment Measures

Assignments include: a resume, goals and objectives, and research related to various internship opportunities and living arrangements. In addition, the student will participate in a community service project, professional attire sessions, oral presentations and mock interviews. Timely completion of all assignments and exercises is required.
