DSN 402: Global Design Studio

Prerequisites: Senior standing and 2.5 GPA in-major, or permission of instructor.

Credit Hours: (2-3)


The purpose of this class is for students to become familiar with the events, trends, and problems facing citizens and designers in an increasingly interdependent, global world. Students will have a global view and weigh design decisions within the parameters of ecological, socio-economic, and cultural contexts. In this interdisciplinary studio, students will address complex design problems through multi-disciplinary collaborations and consensus building.


Detailed Description of Course

In this course, students will gain an understanding of the globalization of business and design and that decision-making in the United States has a far reaching impact abroad. Students will explore environmental ethics and the role of sustainability and will gain a global perspective approach to problem solving. In particular, students will obtain an awareness of cultural and social differences among regions of the world along with the implications of practicing design and business in a world market. Students will leave this class understanding that the globalization of business and design affects the environment, culture, economic development, and quality of life across the world. This class will also include:

1. Exposure to contemporary issues affecting design.
2. Opportunities for developing knowledge of other cultures.
3. Opportunities to solve simple to complex design problems, for research and problem solving methods, and for innovation and creative thinking.
4. Collaboration, consensus building, leadership, and team work.
5. Interaction with multiple disciplines representing a variety of points of view and perspectives. (5d)


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will complete a series of Charrettes in groups. Debates, role playing exercises, in class discussion, readings, and guest lecturers could also be used.

As a result of this course, the student will be able…

1. To demonstrate an understanding of the concepts, principles, and theories of sustainability.
2. To demonstrate an understanding of globalization and the implications of conducting the practice of design within a world market.
3. To understand how design needs may vary for different socio-economic populations.
4. To understand that social and cultural norms may vary and are relevant to making appropriate design decisions.
5. To demonstrate creative thinking and originality through presentation of a variety of ideas, approaches, and concepts.
6. To have an awareness of team work structures and dynamics and the nature and value of integrated design practices.

8. Student work demonstrates understanding of the concepts, principles, and theories of sustainability as they pertain to building methods, materials, systems, and occupants.


Assessment Measures

Projects and student presentations. Design management and Design Culture majors will be required to take the 3 credit hour option for this course and will be assessed on their capstone project as part of the three credit hour option.
