DSN 645: Collaboration Studio
               
Prerequisite: Graduate standing in MFA 鈥 Design Thinking concentration; DSN 600

This online course will provide students with an overview of team dynamics, team leadership techniques, team protocols, and the appropriate application of interdisciplinary teams.


Detailed Description of Course

Content: Team protocols, dynamics, leadership techniques and the appropriate application of interdisciplinary teams are introduced.  This course will: focus on issues relevant to team dynamics; examine how methodologies of 鈥淭eam Wisdom鈥 help navigate the spaces of innovation, inspiration, ideation and implementation; help students learn to recognize and develop their own depth of skill and disposition for collaboration across disciplines; study the positive synergies developed between different disciplines; and explore the relationships among creativity, business, innovation, management, and entrepreneurship.     


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This is an online course. Students may have access to online lectures, readings, discussion boards or other developing online technologies.


Goals and Objectives of this Course

To master basic 鈥淭eam Wisdom鈥 strategies, the student must:
    1. identify and define relevant aspects of team dynamics;
    2. learn strategies in how to accept setbacks;
    3. integrate practice models and demonstrate an understanding of their value;
    4. generate an 鈥渆nvironment鈥 that encourages spontaneous interactions, risk taking, and exploration;
    5. test leadership strategies; and
    6. apply strategies in simulations, garner feedback, and compare and contrast what worked and why.


Communication

The student will be able to:
     1. communication techniques appropriate to a range of purposes and audiences;
     2. express ideas clearly in oral and written formats; and
    3. process information using convergent/divergent thinking and analysis and synthesis strategies.


Management Strategies

The student will be able to understand:
    1. the elements of design management strategies [business development, financial management, strategic planning, and/or project management];
    2. professional ethics; and
    3. the utility of 鈥渟mart鈥 design teams.


Assessment Measures

May include but is not limited to project(s), design competition, discussion boards and team work.
