ESHE 117: Racquetball

Credit Hours: (1) Two contact hours per week. 15-week and 7.5-week courses are offered. 7.5-week courses may be blocked together for 2 credit hours

Practice and study of sport and physical activity skills.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The purpose of the course is to provide a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of racquetball. In addition, the students are taught the following skills:

1. forehand, backhand, and overhead strokes
2. body positioning about the court
3. basic racquetball shots, including serves, kill, passing, pinch kill, ceiling, and the lob.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Basic skills are presented through lecture/demonstration format and are practiced by the class as a whole until major errors are corrected. The students then break up into groups in separate courts to practice skills. Once the basic rules and skills are learned, students spend half of their classtime playing either singles or doubles and half of their time observing other classmates' games and discussing and analyzing those games with the instructor.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. to introduce the students to the game of racquetball
2. to have the students gain a degree of skill proficiency which will allow them to play and enjoy the game.
3. to have the students develop strong fundamental skills and strategies which can be built upon to later develop more advanced skills and techniques.

 

Assessment Measures

Grades are determined and weighted as follows:

  • Attendance and Participation 20%
  • Skill Testing 50%
  • Game Performance 10%
  • Final Examination 20%
