I. Course Title: Introduction to Allied Health Sciences

II. Course Number: ESHE 205

III. Credit Hours: 1 credit

IV. Pre- or Corequisites: BIOL 105.

V. Course Description: Introduction to educational and professional opportunities through the Allied Health Science program. The course provides an overview of practicum experiences and academic requirements for entry into professional allied health programs of study (e.g., Physical Therapy). Students are also required to work on career development, resumes, and graduate school interviewing skills.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

This course is designed to provide students an overview of post-graduate opportunities in allied health professions. Topics will include professional school entrance requirements, observation purposes and procedures, and curriculum requirements and expectations. An overview of professional allied health associations will also be presented.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Various instructional methodologies will be used for this course. Instructional emphasis is on common pathways and requirements for professional allied health programs. Lectures and flipped classrooms will be used. Individual and group assignments will be employed to encourage students to take ownership of their undergraduate program in order to successfully apply to a chosen professional allied health program. Critical reflection on interview processes and preparation for practicums are evaluated throughout the course.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

  1. Explain the role and function of allied health care professionals (e.g., occupational therapists, physical therapists, physician assistants).
  2. Identify the general and specific pre-requisites for varied professional allied health programs.
  3. Identify prospective allied health observation settings.
  4. Identify program-specific pre-requisites.
  5. Develop a degree program sequence to meet professional school pre-requisites.

Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Self-reflections
  2. Short-answer/essay questions
