ESHE 210: Introduction to Teaching K-12 Physical Education
Prerequisite: 15 semester hours completed
Credit Hours: (2) One hour lecture; two hours laboratory
Teacher candidates will gain an understanding of the history, philosophy, sociology,
and current models of teaching physical education. The course provides an overview
of the teacher licensure process for health and physical education in the Commonwealth
of Virginia.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
A variety of instructional methods including lecture, small group work, class presentations, case studies, email, the internet, and Student Management System help participants understand the philosophy and practical aspects of teaching current models in physical education.

Goals, objectives, and assignments in this class address National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE)/National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Standards, specifically:
掳 NASPE/NCATE Standard 1: Content Knowledge
掳 Physical education teachers understand physical education content and disciplinary
concepts related to the development of a physically educated person.
Goals, objectives and assignments in this class address Virginia Department of Education
Health and Physical Education (VDOE HPE) Licensure Standards, specifically:
掳 VDOE HPE Standard 1: Understanding of the knowledge, skills, and processes of
health and physical education as defined in the Virginia Standards of Learning.
掳 VDOE HPE Standard4.d: Basic understanding of the administration of a health
and physical education program, including its role in comprehensive school health.
掳 VDOE HPE Standard 7.a: Understanding of and ability to teach: The relationship
between a physically active lifestyle and health.
掳 VDOE HPE Standard 7.b: Understanding of and ability to teach: The cultural significance
of dance, leisure, competition, and sportsmanship.

As a result of successfully completing this course, each teacher candidate will be
able to:
鈼 Locate and demonstrate knowledge of approved state and national content standards
and local program goals (NASPE/NCATE 1.6; VDOE HPE 1).
鈼 Demonstrate a basic understanding of comprehensive school health programs and identify
key colleagues in the successful administration of high-quality physical education
programs (VDOE HPE 4.d).
鈼 Understand and critically analyze current physical education issues and laws based
on a historical, philosophical, and sociological perspective (NASPE/NCATE 1.5).
鈼 Express a personal teaching philosophy that is compatible with the Department of
Exercise, Sport, and Health Education at 澳门老奇人论坛 (VDOE HPE 7.a).
鈼 Summarize historical foundations and their impact of the future of teaching physical
education (NASPE/NCATE 1.5).
鈼 Summarize philosophical viewpoints and their impact on the future of teaching physical
education (NASPE/NCATE 1.5).
鈼 Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to teach the relationship between a
physically active lifestyle and health (VDOE HPE 7.a).
鈼 Demonstrate knowledge of key national and international events which directly impact
(or have impacted) the teaching of physical education in K-12 schools (NASPE/NCATE

The students are specifically assessed on the following items:
