ESHE 212: Introduction to Sport Management

Prerequisite:  Fifteen credit hours

Credit Hours: (3)

Designed to provide students with an overview of the sport management/administration profession and the array of careers currently available in the sport industry. Studies the impact of social, historical, health and economic trends on the growth of sport in the United States and throughout the world. Special emphasis is placed on ethical and diversity issues as they relate to the sport management profession. Information related to the governance of sport organizations is studied.

Note(s): Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

1. Introduction to sport management as  a profession.
2. Sport management skills, techniques and terminology.
3. Careers in sport management.
4. The body of knowledge in sport management.
5. Ethics and the sport management professional.
6. Diversity in sport management.
7. Historical background of sport and sport management.
8. Sport governance.
9. The nature and function of sport organizations in the United States.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Teaching methods will include one or more of the following:

• Lecture
• Guest speakers
• Problem-based learning
• Student presentations
• Class discussions
• Outside readings


Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Define sport management.
2. Identify the significance of sport as an international social institution.
3. °ÄÃÅÀÏÆæÈËÂÛ̳ desirable professional skills and attitudes.
4. Descript the nature and scope of professional opportunities in the sport industry.
5. Summarize a variety of functions that sport managers typically perform.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of theories associated with management, leadership, and organizational behavior and how these theories are applied in sport enterprises.
7. Critically analyze major challenges confronting various segments of the industry.
8. Explain the relevance of ethical, legal, historical, sociological, and psychological concepts to the management of sport.
9. Demonstrate an appreciation of diversity through the use of unbiased language and an inclusive approach to human relations.
10. Identify research questions in sport management and analyze and interpret published research.
11. Create a cover letter and professional resume.
