V. Course Description: Designed to provide students with an overview of the fitness, strength and conditioning discipline and the array of careers currently available in the fitness and sport performance industry. Additional focus is placed on the capacities to demonstrate and critique exercise technique targeting strength, power, endurance, flexibility, and agility.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.

Content:

  1. Introduction to the fitness professions.
  2. Certification and training for fitness professionals.
  3. Work life and financial rewards for fitness professionals.
  4. Introduction to the strength and conditioning professions.
  5. Certification and training for strength and conditioning professionals.
  6. Work life and financial rewards for strength and conditioning professionals.
  7. Graduate programs for strength and conditioning.
  8. Exercise technique for the strength lifts (e.g. squat, deadlift, bench press, pull ups, and technique variants).
  9. Exercise technique for the power lifts (e.g. clean, jerk, snatch, and technique variants).
  10. Exercise technique for agility (e.g. change of direction, balance, body awareness).
  11. Exercise technique for endurance running.
  12. Exercise technique for flexibility exercises (e.g. static, dynamic, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF).   

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Course instruction strategies may include lecture, demonstration, activity, performance analysis, and oral communication activities.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Having successfully completed this course, students will be able to:

  1. Research career opportunities in the fitness and strength and conditioning fields.
  2. Research certification in the fitness and strength and conditioning fields.
  3. Research graduate programs in the strength and conditioning fields.
  4. Perform proper technique in the squat, deadlift, bench press, pull-ups, and technique variants.
  5. Evaluate proper technique in the squat, deadlift, bench press, pull-ups, and technique variants.
  6. Evaluate proper technique in the hang snatch, hang clean, and jerk.
  7. Perform proper technique in change of direction, balance, and body awareness exercises.
  8. Evaluate proper technique in change of direction, balance, and body awareness exercises.
  9. Perform proper technique in endurance running exercises.
  10. Evaluate proper technique in endurance running and sprinting exercises.
  11. Perform proper technique in static, dynamic, and PNF flexibility exercises.
  12. Evaluate proper technique in static, dynamic, and PNF flexibility exercises.

VIII. Assessment Measures:

Assessments may include, but are not limited to the following measures: written exam, papers, technique evaluations, portfolio projects, and critical reflections.
