I. Course Title: Physical Activity and Aging

II. Course Number: ESHE 315

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: None

V. Course Description: Provides an overview of exercise, fitness, and the aging process. Given the rapid increase in the number of elderly persons in our society, the student of the 21st century should be able to relate to and understand the factors that affect the aging from the health and fitness point of view.

Note(s): Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

The course will provide an in-depth study of the many factors associated with exercise and the aging process. Students will examine how aging impacts the physical, emotional, and social aspects of life in relation to health and exercise. Additionally, students will examine how individual and societal beliefs regarding aging impact behaviors, beliefs, cultural expectations, and social institutions response to the geriatric population and our view of the aging process. Students will analyze the interactions between societal views on aging in contrast with the physical, mental, and emotional process of aging in the 21st century.

The course may be delivered by any of the following methods:

  • Lecture
  • Audiovisual Aids
  • Presentations
  • Interviews
  • Experiential learning at a senior housing center
  • Guest speakers

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

  1. Discuss myths of aging and exercise.
  2. Explain numerous theories of aging.
  3. Explain anthropological and skeletal changes associated with the aging process.
  4. Prescribe a fitness program for a senior citizen and be able to evaluate the success of the program.
  5. Design and conduct an activity program for the aging.
  6. Investigate and justify the need for special activities and programs for the elderly.
  7. Determine factors in the purchase and selection of equipment and supplies for programs for the elderly.
  8. Analyze individual and societal beliefs regarding aging and the impact of those beliefs on the aging process
