ESHE 388: Coaching the Athlete

Prerequisite: Junior Standing

Credit Hours: (3)

Develop an understanding of the obligations a coach has to the athlete, school, and community.

Note(s): Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

It is important to have an understanding of coaching responsibilities that goes beyond skill acquisition.

1. The Coach

 

            a. as a Leader

            c. as a Disciplinarian

 

2. The Coach and the Athlete

 

            a. Biological Considerations
            b. Motivating the Athlete
            c. Teaching the Athlete

 

3. The Coach as an Administrator

 

            a. Fiscal Management
            b. Schedule Planning
            c. Legal Aspect

 

4. The Coach as a Personnel Manager

 

            a. Selecting Assistant Coaches
            b. Selecting Managers and Trainers
            c. Selecting Support Groups

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lectures group discussions, student presentation, guest speakers, and outside assignments are used to prepare the student to coach. The use of transparencies along with video analysis foster class discussion.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The goals and objectives of the course are:

 

1. to explain the legal aspects of coaching in terms of negligence and how to manage the risks of liability;
2. to describe the two different types of insurance necessary for coaches and athletes;
3. to demonstrate specific actions of the prevention of injuries to the athlete and rehabilitation in case of injury;
4. to explain the step-by-step process of handling medical emergencies;
5. to identify the role f the coach through planning, implementing instruction, and evaluating effectiveness;
6. to demonstrate the effects of conditioning on athlete;
7. to apply a positive approach to coaching through reinforcement and motivating the athlete;
8. to identify standards of behavior for oneself and toward others; and
9. to recognize how to properly confront drug-related problems in athletes.

 

Assessment Measures

Student assessment consist of two written test and four assignments written outside the classroom. Attendance and participation will determine borderline grade.
