ESHE 461: Organization and Administration of Health/Fitness Programs

Prerequisites: 56 Credit hours

Credit Hours: (3)

Focuses on the development, organization, implementation and administration of health, fitness, wellness and other health promotion programs. It includes basic information on facility and staffing requirements for such programs.


Detailed Description of Content of Course

The course will include the basic knowledge of developing, organizing, implementing and administering health promotion programs in a variety of settings. Job will include the essentials of facility designs, budget and staffing requests for the programs and the context in which it is offered. Specific topics to be included:

1. Determination of needs
2. Concept development
3. Budget
4. Rate of consultants
5. Space requests and design
6. Staff selection
7. Staff development
8. Equipment
9. Day to day operations
10. Service to members
11. Record keeping
12. Future trends
13. Liability


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course is a three hour lecture. The resources are from the text and outside readings. The class members will visit and complete a written evaluation of several existing programs. Guest speakers will be invited to discuss specific topics. Audio visual materials will be used to obtain an understanding of other programs and facilities.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the completion of this course the students shall be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the essential components of a health promotion program.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of how different culture and work environments affect the needs of the program.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of how the nature of the program determines the faculty and equipment needs.
4. Articulate comprehensino of the general aspects of budget development and management.
5. Utilize consulting services.
6. Determine space requirements for the program and develop a faculty design to meet those needs.
7. Advertise, interview, hire and develop program staff.
8. Select quality equipment that is safe and meets the needs of the program participants.
9. Demonstrate organization and ability to manage the day to day operations of a facility.
10. Understand the importance of member service.
11. Maintain proper records.
12. Articulate an understanding of industry trends.


Assessment Measures

Assessments may include but are not limited to: written exams, written evaluations of the program students have observed, practice facility design (with equipment) students must develop, assigned written report on an aspect of the course.
