DSNF 207: Promotion Techniques

Prerequisites: DSN 220, DSNF 200 and DSNF 202; or permission of instructor

Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio

Expansion and application of fashion sketching, design vision and process, presentation formats, and target market interpretation to successfully communicate a design concept. 

 

Detailed Description of Course

The student will apply fashion and garment sketching skills and work with a range of presentation media. Topics include: intermediate sketching techniques, target market research, line development and packaging for presentation, designing for competition.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Demonstration will provide an overview of fashion sketching techniques. In studio, the student will apply basic sketching skills and the design process to the development of original design ideas. Intermediate graphic representation skills are developed through the exploration of various media and rendering techniques. Creativity of expression and conceptual thinking are also emphasized.

 

Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will:

Demonstrate an awareness of:

1. Apparel line development to address specific aesthetic and functional goals

 

Demonstrate knowledge of:

2. Fashion sketching through the use of croquis, free-hand, and other techniques (emphasis on representation of shaping/fitting devices and style lines).

3. Media and presentation techniques.

4. Rapid visualization techniques for expressing/demonstrating design solutions.

5. Design vision (verbal and visual representation - branding).

6. Elements (including color, texture and shape) and principles of design applications appropriate for target markets.

7. Garment style identification.

8. Style selection process for an apparel line.

9. Body interaction with garment function, structure, and aesthetics.

10. The design process documentation and communication.

11. Effective time and project management.

 

Demonstrate understanding of:

12. Elements and principles of design as applied to presentations (including functional drivers).

13. Self and peer critique processes and application.

 

Assessment Measures

Studio assignments, including exercises, projects, presentations and critiques, will assess the students’ ability to successfully apply presentation skills. Written and oral critiques, preliminary design ideas, craftsmanship and concept development comprise an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all projects.

Presentations utilizing a range of media

Design process documentation – digital presentation, e.g., InDesign (3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12)

Team produced digital style library (2, 3, 7, 13)

Competition submission exercise, electronic products (such as the AATCC C2C competition, apparel line) (1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)

Original apparel line portfolio addressing target market and designer’s branding vision (includes flats, call-outs, and rendered floats, and design concept statement). Image may be hand generated but scanned, final products are digital. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13).
