V. Course Description: Serves as an introduction to the profession of health education and health promotion. It will examine underlying factors related to health and introduces the student to the process of managing current health problems in the United States.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

This course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive background of the field of Health Education and Promotion. . The course presents scientific knowledge of how health education and health promotion professionals target health issues in society.

The course will include:

  1. Historical Background of Health Education and Health Promotion.
  2. Modern Concepts of Health
  3. Health Problems in America
  4. Health Resources
  5. Exploration of Careers in HEHP

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Students will gain knowledge through lecture, group discussions, and projects.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Describe the history of health and health education.
  2. Describe the settings and job responsibilities of a health education/health promotion professional.
  3. Locate, summarize, and present valid health information to a variety of audiences.
  4. Develop a personal and professional philosophy.
  5. Compare and contrast health education and promotion theories.
  6. Prioritize health needs of specific populations.
  7. Describe underlying factors related to health education and health promotion

VIII. Assessment Measures:

Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to: exams, individual and/or group assignments, critical reflections, and/or projects.
