HLTH 451: Drug Use and Drug Abuse Education

Prerequisites: None

Credit Hours: (3)

Provides students with a background of the history of drug use and abuse in the United States.  Students will compare drugs according to classification, physiological effects of the drugs, and potential for misuse and dependence.  Students will research the impact of abuse and dependence on society.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the history of drug use and abuse in society, as well as to identify, discuss and debate current issues in drug use and abuse.  The course will provide students with background knowledge of classifications of drugs, trends in drug use, consequences of use, treatment for abuse and dependence, as well as legal ramifications of use of drugs.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will gain knowledge through lecture, group discussions, and projects.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the end of the course, students shall be able to:

1.  Describe the history of drug use and abuse in the United States and the world.

2.  Describe classifications and physiological effects of drugs.

3.  Research and debate current drug laws in the United States.

4.  Examine drug treatment programs.

Student learning shall be assessed using one or more of the following methods:

1. Exams

2. Assignments

3. Projects

4. Presentations
