HSCI 494: Internship I

Prerequisites: HSCI 300 and HSCI 395

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.  This is a pass/fail course.

Catalog Description

Serves as a summative experience, bridging a student's academic preparation with meaningful, hands-on job tasks and activities in health-related facilities or organizations. A minimum of 120 hours is required for the internship I course.

Content

The course serves as a summative experience, bridging a student鈥檚 academic preparation with meaningful, hands-on job tasks and activities in health-related facilities or organizations. A minimum of 120 hours is required for the internship I course (Pass/Fail). Students will be required to complete tasks as assigned by their internship preceptor.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

 

Students are required to engage in a minimum of 120-hours of internship experience that addresses hands-on job tasks and activities in health-related facilities or organizations. Under the supervision of a faculty member, students are required to identify and establish an internship site based on academic preparation, unique skills, and career plans.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Reflect on the professional skills gained through the internship experiences.
  2. Evaluate the types of services provided by the facility/organization.
  3. Analyze the impact the facility/organization has on the community and the target population it serves.
  4. Examines the cultural diversity of those served by the facility/organization.

Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include a range of strategies such as attendance and required hour attainment, hour logs, weekly assignments, journal entries, independent and group project reports, presentations, self and mentor evaluations, discussion boards, quizzes, exams, papers, virtual training, case-studies, and online survey tools.
