I. Course Title: Fundamentals of Healthcare Administration

II. Course Number: HADM 200

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: None

V. Course Description: 

Students will learn how healthcare has evolved, learning about different healthcare delivery systems and provider models.  Aspects of healthcare as a business and healthcare as a way of improving the wellbeing of the community will be addressed.  Students will gain general knowledge about administrative processes that increase productivity, organization and overall success of a business in the healthcare industry.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

  • Overview of the healthcare system
  • Understand the theories relating to healthcare leaders and paper on the leader style of the student choosing
  • Read and ACHE Code of Ethics and compare/contrast to another profession
  • The Importance of quality care and payment
  • Understand and describe value-base care now and in the future
  • Change management and healthcare leaders

Method of Instruction: Lectures, Required Readings, Recommended Readings, Class/Group Discussions, Student Presentations, Slide Presentations/Microlessons 

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  2. Identify healthcare management theories and concept as applied in the healthcare organization. 
  3. Understand the importance of values and ethics relating to healthcare administrative leaders and other healthcare disciplines. 
  4. Describe healthcare administration concepts and principles towards the change within the healthcare environment, value-base care, population health, technology, quality and risk management.

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of social, behavioral, and environmental factors that influence individual and population health in the US. and globally.
  2. Demonstrates knowledge and critical thinking skills in healthcare management concepts and practices.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to manage effectively healthcare organizations within complex competitive, regulatory, and legal environments.
  4. Demonstrates the ability to apply, integrate, and synthesize acquired knowledge and skills toward the resolution of practical managerial issues and problems.
  5. Demonstrates effective professional communication, cultural sensitivity and a commitment to life-long learning.
