ITEC 145

ITEC 145: Data Ethics, Privacy and Security (GE)

Credit hours (3)

The course will foster ethical online behavior; introduce students to privacy and security issues of their personal data on mobile devices and social media. The course is designed for non-majors with limited background in Information Technology. 

Note(s): General Education and Applied Learning designated course.  Students that have earned credit for ITEC 345 cannot subsequently earn credit for ITEC 145.  Students may not take ITEC 145 and ITEC 345 concurrently.


Detailed Description of Course

Topics Include:
    1) Threats to personal data from social media sites to mobile devices.
    2) Cyber citizenship: ethics and laws
    3) Cybercrime: motivation and actors
    4) Security controls and detecting exploits

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course


Students will be presented with problems that analyze case studies of current cyber security exploits on smart phones and web.  Projects that teach technological solutions to cyber security and privacy will be given.  

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students who complete the course will be able to:
    1) Describe what it means to be an ethically conscious and responsible cyber-citizen;
    2) Identify the threats to privacy and security to personal data on the web and on mobile devices;
    3) Enumerate common technological solutions to protecting the security and privacy of data;
    4) Enumerate strategies to detect cybercrime

Assessment Measures

Instructor may give written assignments that assess the conceptual knowledge.  Lab-based assignments may be used to test student understanding of cybercrime and the controls to mitigate such crime.  Assessment will include at least two exams.
