V.       Course Description:     

This course provides an introduction to healthcare delivery systems and settings in the United States. The course offers a historical perspective on the origins of our health care system and the forces that change and shape our healthcare delivery systems today. This course includes overview information on healthcare costs, accreditation and key health professions competencies.

VI.      Course Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course the student will

  1. Discuss the history and current influences on US healthcare.
  2. Differentiate the main levels of care (primary, secondary and tertiary care.)
  3. Describe the structure, process, and outcome components of healthcare systems.
  4. Identify factors that contribute to the rising costs of healthcare.
  5. Explain how healthcare accreditation helps to ensure delivery of safe, quality care.
  6. Discuss the five key health professions competencies as identified by the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
