MGNT 323: Human Resource Management
Prerequisite: Junior standing

Introduction to the most important functions of human resource management, including
strategic HR planning, EEO laws, job analysis, recruitment, selection, training and
development, performance appraisal, and compensation.
Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The primary topics covered will include:
• Strategic human resource planning
• Job analysis and job design
• Recruitment and selection
• Equal Employment Opportunity and other employment legislation
• Performance appraisal
• Training and development
• Compensation and benefits
• Health and safety issues
• Unions and collective bargaining
• Employee discipline and dismissal
• International staffing issues
• Ethical considerations
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The course will be taught from the perspective of what a general manager needs to
know about managing human resources in an organization. The instructional methods
include lectures, individual and group activities, case studies, experiential exercises,
current event topics, occasional guest speakers, research projects, videos, and/or
a term project. The role of human resource management in both small and large organizations
is discussed.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Explain the basic functions of a human resource manager
2. Understand basic employment legislation and EEOC applications.
3. Analyze basic human resource management problems.
4. °ÄÃÅÀÏÆæÈËÂÛ̳ human resource management theories and concepts as a practicing manager.
Assessment Measures
Written and oral assignments, and examinations. Some instructors may include group
assignments, either written or oral, in the assessment.
