MGNT 421: Leadership and Motivation

Prerequisite: Junior standing and MGNT 322

Credit Hours: (3)

Study of leadership as an interactive process involving the leader, followers, and situation. Emphasizes understanding the concepts and theories of leadership and motivation and how they are applied by practicing organizational leaders and managers.

Note(s): Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.


Detailed Description of Content of Course

Course will cover concepts and theories of leadership and motivation in these major topic areas:

• Leadership development methods including experience and educational programs
• Methods of assessing leadership competence
• Leader characteristics including power, influence, values, traits, and behaviors
• Follower characteristics including motivation, performance, groups/teams
• Situational characteristics including contingencies


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Lecture, class discussion, experiential exercises, cases, research, and analyses.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

On completion of this course, students should be able to:

1.  Describe, illustrate, explain, and discuss behavioral science theories and concepts as they relate to the leadership process.
2.  Demonstrate an understanding of leadership theories, skills, and their application in managing organizational activities in today’s business environment.
3.  Distinguish leaders from non-leaders, effective leaders from non-effective leaders, and followers form fans.
4.  Identify personal strengths and weaknesses of the student’s own leadership style.
5. Research, analyze, and report on the leadership attributes and actions of a notable organizational leader.


Assessment Measures

Written and oral assignments, skill building exercises, research and analysis project, exams.
