MATH 325

Math 325: Special Methods – Secondary Mathematics Education

Prerequisites: MATH 172

Credit Hours: (3)

A special methods course in the teaching of mathematics at the secondary level.  Will not satisfy the requirements for a major in mathematics except for those in the Bachelor of Science degree program pursuing certification to teach. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of technology in teaching, problem solving, and representation of mathematics concepts.

Detailed Description of Course

Content

  • Reasons for teaching mathematics, goals and objectives
  • Models of mathematics teaching including on-line instructional materials, the Virginia SOL’s, and NCTM Standards to guide instruction.
  • Knowledge and skills concerning mathematical content and instructional strategies. This will include the use of appropriate technology, such as graphing calculators to solve mathematical problems, Geometers Sketchpad, Excel, and other software as appropriate to instruction.
  • Individualized mathematics instruction, including the need to address diversity within the classroom and community.
  • Using research and experience to teach effectively.
  • Planning and design of the mathematics curriculum, including attention to equity concerns, curricula for understanding, uses of technology and manipulatives, and problem solving as learning tools.
  • Topics in discrete mathematics, number systems, algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics and probability will be used to form problem solving techniques as they pertain to secondary math instruction.
  • The class will model strategies for teaching in the mathematics classroom including collaborative learning, dialogue, and inquiry.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Most instructors will use whole class and small group discussion along with some lecture. A variety of other instructional methods will also be used including collaborative small groups, computer demonstrations, and problem solving using concrete manipulatives. Students will be required to make individual presentations to the class.

Student Goals and Objectives of the Course

1) The student is expected to acquire knowledge and skills about mathematics content and effective mathematics teaching as indicated in the NCTM         standards.
2) The student is expected to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become a professional mathematics educator.
3) The students will develop appropriate mathematical communication skills, make connections between and among mathematical ideas and in                 contexts outside mathematics to build mathematical understanding, use diverse mathematical representations to develop understanding of                 mathematical concepts, and including the use of technology to present those models.

Assessment Measures

Graded tasks may include tests, quizzes, homework exercises, and class presentations and attendance.

Other Course Information

This course is intended for students who are preparing to teach secondary school mathematics.
