MUSC 257. Singing for the Stage
Three hours, 1 credit.

Prerequisite:  none

Fundamental instruction in vocal technique, music literacy, and preparation of audition repertoire through computer assisted programs, group tutorials, and class performance.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course will provide fundamental instruction in vocal technique, music literacy and preparation of audition repertoire.  Singing skills will include breath management technique, resonance balancing, and diction.  This course will utilize computer assisted instruction for drill of basic rhythms/sight singing and mastery of literature.  Weekly tutorials will address individual needs for vocal instruction and provide coaching opportunities with peer evaluation.  Students who successfully pass this class will achieve significantly enhanced skill sets in vocal ability, demonstrate basic music literacy, and leave with at least one well-prepared audition piece.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course will make use of interactive lecture and demonstration, group tutorials, student class practice and performances, peer evaluation, and exams.  This course will also utilize individualized computer assisted programs for drill and mastery of repertoire.  Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding of course concepts through weekly practice journals and performance/written exams.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

  • Demonstrate the ability to sing with the understanding of efficient vocal technique.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of basic music literacy skills.
  • Learn, memorize and perform at least one audition piece.
  • Develop procedures for learning, interpreting, and memorizing music.
  • Gain confidence as a singer/performer through interpreting, memorizing and performing songs.
  • Acquire tools to evaluate and positively critique other peer performers.
  • Expand knowledge of vocal repertoire including musical theater selections.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate the basics of vocal technique in oral and written form.

 

Assessment Measures

Students will be assessed via their attendance, class participation, weekly practice journal, weekly progress, exams, and class performances.
