MUSC 358: Choral Literature and Materials

Prerequisites: Open to Music Education students

Credit Hours: (2)

Survey of choral music literature for K-12 school and community choral programs. Instructional method includes two lecture hours and one laboratory hour per week.


Detailed Description of Course

1) Survey of literature and style analysis of music for school choirs
    a. Choral music from the classical canon
    b. Choral music of living composers
    c. Ethnic/multicultural music for choirs
    d. Vernacular music for choirs

2) Literature resources
    a. State graded lists and other published lists of literature
    b. Choral public domain websites
    c. Publisher catalogs
    d. Professional journal reviews
    e. Reading sessions, workshops, clinics, and conferences
    f. Recommendations of colleagues
    g. Concert programs

3) Choral music as curriculum
    a. Selecting repertoire based on learning objectives
    b. Copyright law
    c. Use of technology
    d. Concert programming


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The objectives of the course will be accomplished through reading and listening assignments, discussion, lecture, written papers, score analysis, projects, students presentations, construction of a database of choral music literature, exams, and peer teaching exercises.


Student Goals and Objectives  

By the end of this course, students will:

1) Demonstrate knowledge of choral genres and style of each
2) Identify appropriate repertoire and discern implication of repertoire-as-curriculum
3) Demonstrate how to locate appropriate choral music for curriculum
4) develop a one-year choral curriculum for each level: elementary, middle, and high school


Assessment Measures

Grades will be based on writing assignments, curriculum project, and conducting-teaching demonstrations.
