MUSC419. Counterpoint
Three hours lecture (3).

Prerequisite: MUSC212.

The detailed study and composition of the various contrapuntal devices and forms found in the history of western music.

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Study and experience in writing various contrapuntal devices each as imitation and invertible counterpoint along with the study and experience in writing such forms as invention, canon and fugue.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will analyze contrapuntal music from different periods of music history and develop their ability to imitate the various contrapuntal devices and forms through exercises in composition.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to complete original musical compositions in a style representative of composers working in the 16th and 18th centuries. Students will be able to compose in 2- and 3-part textures using musical forms common in these historical periods. Students registered for graduate credit are expected to illustrate a higher degree of complexity and musical craft; and to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of harmonic motion and modulation.

 

Assessment Measures

Grades will be based on written tests, composition exercises and final exam.

Students will be encouraged to have their composition exercises performed in the classroom or in a recital.
