Catalog Entry

MUSC458. Accompanying
Two hours lab/coaching (1).

Prerequisite: Permission of instructor

Piano/guitar accompanying in class, applied lessons, rehearsals and public performances. May be repeated for credit.  Music Education students spend at least 4 hours as an accompanist for a school choral ensemble during their final required semester.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Accompanying Class is open to all music and non-music majors with adequate piano background.  The class is divided into two tracks:

-Track A is for student pianists who perform with vocalists and instrumentalists within the Music Department.  Vocal repertoire, including German Lieder, French and Italian art songs and standard opera arias, is studied and analyzed in-depth along with instrumental sonatas, concertos and other works.  When appropriate, the class presents a recital at the end of the semester.

-Track B is for Vocal/Choral Music Education students preparing to play for school choral ensembles in rehearsal and in performance.  Students in this track play vocal lines and accompaniments for choral music in a variety of styles.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The setting for the weekly Accompanying Class is much like a Master Class.  Outside of the Master Class setting, individual private lessons guide and direct students in the technical and musical preparation of their accompanying/collaborative repertoire.  Music Education students travel to school sites for at least 4 hours of practical experience in accompanying during their final semester of Accompanying Class.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will have developed workable and artistic skills in sight reading and music collaboration and will have knowledge of performance practice in the art of collaboration.

Assessment Measures

Students are graded on their preparation for rehearsals and performances and their progress through the semester.  Music Education students must provide a video tape of their final accompanying work in the field.

Other Course Information

There is an attempt to offer students as much variety and experience as possible in ensemble playing. Students are also encouraged to attend concerts and listen to recordings of collaborative performances.`

Piano Minors in the Music Education Vocal/Choral Option required to take 2 semesters of Accompanying must register for consecutive semesters beginning in the Fall Semester.  Piano Majors in the Music Education Vocal/Choral Option are required to take 1 semester of Accompanying and must register for the course in the Spring semester.
