MUSC 546.  Methods and Practicum for General Music  

Credit Hours:  3

Prerequisite:  Undergraduate Degree in Music

Brief Description of Course:  Practicum for graduate students seeking teaching credentials in Music grades K-12. Clinical experience on multiple grade levels appropriate to Music certification in Virginia. In addition to scheduled class/lab/lecture, special seminars designed to enhance professional development of the graduate student will be regularly scheduled.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

Study of methods and materials for the teaching of PreK-12 general music. At least fifteen hours of observation/participation in public school general music classes are required.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The course may include lecture, demonstration, peer teaching exercises in class. The laboratory provides field experiences in general music, with emphasis at the elementary level.

    A. Philosophical foundations for general music education

    C. Sociological foundations for general music education

    D. Conceptual organization of music

        1. Rhythm (beat, accent, meter, rhythm patterns, etc.)

        2. Melody (scale systems, intervals, direction, etc.)

        3. Harmony (pentatonic--layered ostinatos; diatonic--functional harmony; atonal)

        4. Form (song forms, classical forms, other)

        5. Texture

        6. Expressive elements

        7. Timbre

    E. Activities for teaching general music

        1. Movement

        2. Listening

        3. Reading and writing

        4. Singing

        5. Playing instruments

        6. Creating (improvising and composing)

    F. Materials for general music

Goals and Objectives of this Course

At the conclusion of the course, the student will:

a) demonstrate knowledge of the philosophical, historical and sociological foundations underlying public education and music education in the United States.

b) demonstrate knowledge of a range of activities and concepts for general music.

c) demonstrate competent use of current methodologies in general music.

d) demonstrate good classroom management techniques.

e) be able to analyze musical materials for use in general music education.

f) have skills in lesson planning and evaluating music instruction for a variety of learners.

g) demonstrate professional competence with a variety of contemporary issues affecting general music education, such as implications of legal and ethical issues in education, using non-western materials and accommodating individual differences among children.

h) demonstrate the ability to provide instruction which supports Virginia's Standards of Learning for Music and other instructional objectives.

i) be informed regarding legal and ethical issues in music education.

j) demonstrate the ability to utilize appropriate hardware and software for admininstration, data collection, communication and presentation.

k) have at least fifteen hours of observation/participation in public school general music classes.

l) demonstrate a commitment to professional growth through participation in four hours of professional development workshops, in addition to active membership in collegiate MENC.
