V.    Course Description:

Students explore the generalist nursing roles of provider, designer, manager, and coordinator of care as they relate to the care of older adult clients. Emphasis is placed on nursing strategies that promote wellness in older adults, patient engagement, and safe, quality patient-centered care along the aging continuum.

VI.    Course Objectives:  

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Examine selected health problems in older adults. (PO 1,2,4)
  2. Incorporate therapeutic communication skills and culturally competent behaviors as an advocate for older adults and their families and caregivers, and those experiencing end-of-life issues. (PO 1,6)
  3. Employ an interprofessional approach in developing strategies that promote healthy aging and quality of life in older adults. (PO 3)
  4. Examine risk reduction strategies and advocacy in addressing societal and family violence including prevention of patient abuse, neglect, and abandonment. (PO 4)
  5. Discuss the impact of socioeconomic, legal, and political issues that influence the care of the older adult. (PO 5)
