NURS 630: Advanced Adult Nursing I

Pre-requisites: NURS 620, NURS 628, NURS 629, NURS 651, undergraduate course in gerontological nursing

Credit Hours: (5-7) Three hours seminar. Six hours practicum

Variable credit; 5-7 credit hours; Introduction to advanced practice in adult nursing. Emphasis is on advanced nursing management of clients/families with selected holistic needs; policy issues related to health promotion, protection and restoration; and ethicallegal issues related to health care delivery. Practicum is individualized and may involve acute care specialty units, medical-surgical units or outpatient settings. Advanced nursing practice roles are emphasized. Current research findings and advancement in nursing theory and practice also determine course content.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

The objectives and content of this course are derived from the School of Nursing's mission and philosophy and facilitate achievement of the Graduate Program outcomes. Additionally, the major topics and skills covered in this course are essential to advanced nursing practice and national accreditation standards. Current research findings and advancement in nursing theory and clinical practice also determine course content.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The following teaching strategies will be employed:

  • Seminar, discussion, student presentations, audiovisuals, guest speakers, practicum, student-faculty conferences, and written projects.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. Analyze the concept of advanced practice in adult health nursing.
2. Discuss national for health care reform.
3. Propose conceptual frameworks for advanced practice in adult health nursing.
4. Analyze current ethical and legal issues related to adult health nursing.
5. Analyze current nursing research and related literature for application to advanced practice with clients/families with complex holistic needs.
6. Synthesize theories relevant to advanced nursing practice, including adult development, teaching/learning, family, and role.
7. Demonstrate beginning proficiency in advanced nursing therapeutic interventions with clients/families who have complex holistic needs in person/environment interaction.
8. Demonstrate knowledge and skill in the adult health clinical nursing specialist advanced practice roles of clinician, collaborator, and educator.
