I. Course Title: Administrative Practicum

II. Course Number: NURS 671

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: Department Approval.

V. Course Description: An administrative practicum experience is supervised by practice experts in nursing and healthcare administration. Competencies essential for the role of the nurse administrator are practiced and refined.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

Students work with a practice expert healthcare leader, either in Nursing or Healthcare Administration in a practicum experience that allows them to learn and demonstrate the role and competencies of administrative leadership. Competencies essential for the role of the nurse administrator are demonstrated and refined.

  • Literature search, review, and posts
  • Professional development plan  

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

  • There are 2 main components to the administrative practicum: Precepted Hours and Non-Precepted Hours
  • A minimum of 135 total hours (45 hrs. per credit) are required for the practicum experience as follows:

Precepted Hours: A minimum of 45 hours (1-credit) working with (face-to-face time) a Master or Doctoral prepared preceptor in a leadership and/or management role in nursing or healthcare.

Sample Activities (activities and hours will vary):

  • Attend leadership meetings and preceptor 4 hours
  • Preceptor-guided learning activities 4 hours
  • Strategic planning activities 4 hours
  • Financial/budgeting activities 4 hours
  • Other leadership activities 4 hours
  • Observation of leaders/preceptor 4 hours
  • Practicum project work 20 hours
  • Presentation of project to preceptor 1 hour
  • Total 45 hours

Non-Precepted Hours: A minimum of 90 hours (2-credits) attending related conferences and/or events, engaging in leadership project(s) or activities, developing the MSN portfolio, and/or other activities to build administrative leadership knowledge and skills while accomplishing the Practicum course objectives. Precepted hours can replace nonprecepted hours.

  • Conferences/seminars/webinars (Session objectives must link to Course and/or Practicum objectives) 8 hours
  • MSN Portfolio development 4 hours
  • MSN Competency Self-Assessment 2 hours
  • Health Policy or Healthcare Legislative Event(s) 8 hours
  • Committee meeting attendance with nursing or healthcare managers/leaders/executives 8 hours
  • Leadership Role(s) in Community Service 8 hours
  • Faculty-approved leadership activities or projects in other courses 32 hours
  • Practicum Course Discussion Forum literature search, review, and posts 4 hours
  • Total 90 hours
  • 90 hours (two credits) of practicum occur cumulatively via faculty approved practicum assignments in other courses and within the Practicum course. All hours are logged as part of the Practicum course completion requirements. 

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  2. Translate administrative knowledge, theory, and research into practice using ethical and legal principles to guide decision making. MSN Essentials 2, 4, 6, 9; PO 2, 4, 6, 9

VIII. Assessment Measures:

Written assignments including papers and discussion board posts, practicum log completion, presentations, and other discretionary methods of evaluation
