NURS 714: Advanced Health Assessment& Diagnostics Lab

Credit Hours: (1) One hour laboratory

Develop competence of assessment techniques across the lifespan to function in the advanced practice role.

Course Content

This course immerses the student in experiential assignments to apply advanced health assessment skills. It allows the student to practice use of the tools and equipment utilized in physical assessment of patients across the lifespan and analyze objective results to augment diagnoses, management, and plan of care for patients.

  3. Utilize assessment tools and equipment
  4. Assessment documentation

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

This course is taught in a hybrid instructional format; online teaching and on-campus learning techniques may be utilized. The following teaching strategies will be employed, but are not limited to a focus on the development of knowledge and skills for critical decision-making needed to deliver advanced practice healthcare to individuals and diverse populations across the lifespan.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, the student will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Demonstrate communication and skills in assessing and documenting subjective and objective information including normal and abnormal findings.
  2. Perform a comprehensive and problem-focused health history and physical exam utilizing appropriate tools and equipment.
  3. Modify the physical exam to focus on specific needs or problems of the client considering age, development, culture, and physical and mental limitations.
  4. Correlate physical findings with pathophysiology through assessment techniques and tests.

Assessment Measures

Evaluation measures to assess achievement of course objectives may include but is not limited to faculty and student led seminar discussions, lectures, guest speakers, case studies, reading assignments, written projects, quizzes, audio or video presentations, online resources, and other instructional technology strategies as appropriate.
