NURS 748:  Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist: Organization/System Sphere of Influence    

Prerequisite:  NURS 710, NURS 712, NURS 713, NURS 716 and concurrent with NURS 749; or permission of faculty

Credit Hours: (3)

Explores the influence of the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) on organizations and systems by articulating the value of nursing care at the decision-making level.

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

Explores the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) influence on organizations and systems by articulating the value of nursing in areas of risk reduction, safety, and other concepts related to quality of care based upon standards of practice and other advanced nursing practice guidelines.  Emphasis is on the CNS as an advocate and leader in professional nursing, professional organizations and interdisciplinary groups.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Learning activities in this class may include but are not limited to:  lecture, faculty/student directed discussions and conferences, documented discussion of theoretical concepts, issues related to organizations and systems, class participation, reading assignments, computer exercises, case studies and other written work. Because the course is online, audio or video presentations/lectures, discussion boards, chat rooms and other instructional technology strategies may be used.

Goals and Objectives of this Course

At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to:

1.  Identify risks, to patient safety, autonomy, and quality of care.
2.  Differentiate between outcomes that require care process modification at the individual or system level.
3.  Provide leadership on the local, regional and or national level.
4.  Integrate theoretical concepts relating to care of the adult and older adult that have impact       on a systems level
5.  Incorporate appropriate CNS Standards of Care into Advanced Practice Registered Nurse      (APRN) guidelines utilized by facilities.
6.  Analyze multiple negotiation strategies to manage conflict.
7.  Identify coaching and mentoring skills for future leadership roles.
                                           

Assessment Measures

May include but are not limited to:  class participation, presentations, computer exercises, papers and other written work, quizzes, and tests.
