OCTH 662: Professional Seminar II

Prerequisite:  Successful completion of OCTH 650, 652, 654, 656 and 658 or permission of the Chair

In this on-line seminar, participants explore and discuss the transition from student to health-care professional.

 

Detailed Description of Content of the Course

Topics include:

  • The transition from student to health-care professional
  • Professional advocacy and participation in professional associations
  • Supervising aids, volunteers and Level I students
  • Certification and licensure
  • Liability issues and malpractice insurance
  • Providing occupational therapy services on a contractual basis
  • Becoming a fieldwork educator
  • Self-assessment of personal abilities and professional competencies
  • Ongoing professional development

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Distance education technology will be used to provide support to students during their full-time Level II Fieldwork placements, and to facilitate discussion about and planning for the transition to professional life. 

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will:

  1. Evaluate and discuss personal abilities and professional competencies as they relate to fieldwork responsibilities;
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of applicable national requirements for credentialing and requirements for state licensure (or certification/registration);
  3. Discuss and participate in professional organizations at the international, national, state and/or local level;
  4. Develop strategies for effective supervision of occupational therapy aides, volunteers and Level I students, during the fieldwork placement;
  5. Discuss professional responsibilities related to liability issues;
  6. Describe professional responsibilities and issues when providing services on a contractual basis;
  7. Describe the professional responsibility for providing fieldwork education, and the criteria for becoming a fieldwork educator;
  8. Discuss strategies for ongoing professional development to ensure that practice is consistent with current and accepted standards.

 

Assessment Measures

Participation in on-line activities and discussions, along with quizzes, will be used to assess the outcomes of this course.
