UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

Catalog Entry

PHYS 481. Undergraduate Research
Credit Hours (1-3).

Prerequisite: PHYS 112 or 222 and 6 hours of PHYS courses at the 300 level or above.

A laboratory course designed for students wishing to pursue an independent research project. May be repeated up to a total of six semester hours.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The student, under the supervision of a faculty member, will undertake a research project in physics. This project cannot be solely a report on work done by others, but must involve experimental and/or theoretical work actually performed by the student.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The student's progress will be closely monitored by the faculty supervisor. A written report will be required at the end of the semester. The student may also be required to give an oral presentation to the Department.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The goal is to provide a setting in which upper class students in the Physics Option can conduct independent research. The students will be exposed to the nature of scientific research; they will develop research skills appropriate to their discipline and to their level; and they will be required to communicate their results.

Assessment Measures

Assessment will be based on the conduct of the research, and, to an extent deemed appropriate by the instructor, on the results of the research. The written report and the oral presentation, if given, will be important, but not the sole, means of assessment.

Other Course Information

None.
