POSC 355 (CG/IR): Global Terrorism

POSC 355 Global Terrorism investigates the phenomenon of terrorism globally with particular emphasis on why terrorism occurs and on domestic and international counterterrorism.


Detailed Description of Course

The course investigates the phenomenon of terrorism globally with particular emphasis on why terrorism occurs and on domestic and international counterterrorism.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course. Students may not receive credit for POSC 459 and POSC 355.


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will learn about the history of terrorism as well as the origin of contemporary terrorist threats. They will understand terrorist mobilization including the psychology of the individual terrorist as well as states' domestic and international counter-terror policies. The course will examine case studies of specific terrorist groups in addition to selected countries' counter-terror responses.


Goals and Objectives of the Course

Students will identify the reasons states and groups choose to use terror tactics. They will critically evaluate terrorism-related information sources and understand the multidimensional counter-terror responses necessary to confront a terrorist threat.


Assessment Measures

Students may be evaluated based on a number of criteria, which may include class participation, performance in simulation exercise(s), and major research papers.
