PSYC 699: Research and Thesis

Credit Hours: Variable credit, (1-6)

Hours and credit to be arranged with the approval of the dean of the Graduate College. See 鈥淭hesis.鈥

 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The student selects the topic of his/her thesis in consultation with an advisor. Close contact is maintained between the student and the faculty advisor, and the thesis committee, during his/her progress through the project.

 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

While actual activities during the research and thesis may vary depending on the topic of research to be covered the common part of the activity is as follows:

  • the student selects a thesis topic, a thesis advisor, and a thesis committee.
  • After the completion of the introductory part of the thesis the student meets formally with his/her committee to discuss the entire project. At this time additions, corrections, suggestions, etc., Concerning the project are discussed. Further meetings with the committee may occur as needed prior to the final examination on the thesis. All theses conform in style to the American Psychological Association format plus an additional requirements stipulated by the graduate college.
  • A final oral examination by the student's entire thesis committee is required following completion.

 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

These may vary but essentially require the student to demonstrate competence in developing a research project, carrying it out, and defending it on academic and professional grounds.

 

Assessment Measures

Assessment is carried out during the course of the conducting of the project--by means of input and feedback from members of the students committee, and through the oral defense of the thesis following completion.

 

Other Course Information

Students are encouraged to prepare a thesis of such quality to qualify for presentation or publication.
