I. Course Title: Personal Health and Wellness (GE)

II. Course Number: PBHL 110

III. Credit Hours: 3 credits

IV. Prerequisites: None

V. Course Description: 

Students will be introduced to the concepts of personal health and wellness. Physical, psychosocial, and ecological dimensions of health and wellness will also be examined. An emphasis is placed on self-assessment of risk factors and individual health behaviors.

Note(s): General Education and Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

  1. Impart students with a foundation in public health principles, practices, and processes.
  2. Prepare students to enter the public health workforce and/or graduate programs in public health, health education, health promotion, or other health-related fields.
  3. Provide students with the required coursework and knowledge in the eight Areas of Responsibility of Health Education Specialists to be eligible to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) examination:
  •         Area I: Assessment of Needs and Capacity
  •         Area II: Planning
  •         Area Ill: Implementation
  •         Area IV: Evaluation and Research
  •         Area V: Advocacy
  •         Area VI: Communlcation
  •         Area VII: Leadership and Management

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Define health impacts of various personal lifestyle choices.
  2. Identify credible sources of health information.
  3. Discuss physical, psychosocial, and ecological dimensions of health and wellness.
  4. Recognize major risks and protective factors for health status.
  5. Assess how beliefs, attitudes, and behavior influence health outcomes.
