V. Course Description: 

Provides an overview of the public health system in the United States. Health determinants, health education and promotion, prevention strategies, epidemiology, public health essential services, and the history and organization of the public health in the US as it relates to different systems, individual behaviors, and cultures are introduced. 

Note(s): General Education and Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

VI. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon completion of the course, the student will: 

  1. Describe the history and organization of the U.S. public health system.
  2. List public health's essential services.
  3. State the determinants of health.
  4. Identify the basic epidemiologic principles related to surveillance, risk factors, morbidity, and mortality.
  5. Discuss disease prevention strategies and the benefits of health education.
