V. Course Description: 

A comprehensive introduction to public health concepts and practice is provided by examining the philosophy, purpose, history, organization, functions, tools, activities and results of public health practice at the national, state, and community levels. Important health issues and problems facing the public health system are addressed.

Note(s): Cultural or Behavioral Analysis designated course.

VI. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will

  1. Comprehend the purpose, organization, mission, and activities of public health practice.
  2. Explain important public health issues at the national, state, and community levels.
  3. Comprehend the etiology and control of infectious and non-infectious threats to health.
  4. Evaluate concepts and measures of disease occurrence in populations.
  5. Be able to describe different health behaviors and environments, and how they interact with each other to impact public health.
