Natural and Cultural Interpretation

Prerequisites: Major in RCPT or OURL minor
This course will introduce students to the role of interpretation in outdoor recreation. Students will study basic flora and fauna, as well as the history of local environments, and examine the philosophy, methods, and techniques of interpretation. Students will develop and practice a variety of interpretive skills through classroom activities and projects.
2. Detailed Description of Course
In this course students will study the importance of interpretation in outdoor recreation. Students will study basic flora and fauna and develop techniques for sharing this information with their participants. They will also examine the historical significance of places that they recreate in (such as the Appalachian Trail and the New River). They will examine the methods and techniques of interpretation and interpretation鈥檚 historical significance on the outdoor recreation industry. Students will develop and practice a variety of interpretive skills through teaching, visiting, and analyzing interpretive sites and practicing their skills as an interpreter.
3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Course instruction strategies may include the following: lecture, oral communication, peer instruction, and field trips.
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course
Objectives of this course are as follows:
1) Identify and describe local flora and fauna
2) Describe the history of local environments and its influence on outdoor recreation
3) Identify the value of interpretation for clients and organizations
4) Develop an oral interpretation on a historical or natural topic
5) Evaluate exhibiting interpretive sites in the local community
5. Assessment Measures
Students may be assessed through the following assignments: written exams, site visit analysis, field trips, journaling and/or peer instruction/leading.
